Iranian television confirmed on Saturday that Iranian instructions regarding the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz remain in effect, stressing the need for all ships to obtain prior permits and coordinate with the Revolutionary Guard Navy before entering or leaving the strait.
Iranian television reported that a group of ships are currently seeking passage permits from Iranian authorities, after unauthorized vessels were fired warning shots while attempting to pass through.
This comes as the US Navy’s information center announced the expansion of a shipping lane off the coast of Oman, in a move aimed at facilitating the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, amid indications of a US move to restore smooth navigation in the vital waterway.
Iran insists on compelling ships to comply with its instructions, threatening to impose fees for passage through the strait, while the United States and Gulf states reject these demands, asserting that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway despite being located within Iranian and Omani territorial waters.
This development comes after renewed tensions early this morning, following US airstrikes targeting sites on Iran’s southern coast, after days of calm following the announcement of the interim agreement between the United States and Iran in Switzerland regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation.
