Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Sunday condemned the Ukrainian attack on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, demanding that the perpetrators of “this criminal act and their supporters” be held accountable.
In a telephone call with EU foreign policy commissioner Kaya Kallas, Araqchi called for “a decisive response from the UN Security Council, the EU and the international community to hold the perpetrators of this criminal act and their supporters accountable.”
Araghchi and Kallas stressed the need to adopt diplomatic initiatives to manage tensions, referring to developments in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz following the Iranian forces’ response to the American aggression against Iran, as reported by the Fars News Agency.
In a statement issued Saturday evening, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the Ukrainian military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, saying: “Iran will not hesitate to defend its interests and national security in accordance with the fundamental principles and rules of international law, particularly the principle of self-defense, and the responsibility for the consequences of Ukraine’s adventures will fall on the Ukrainian regime, its supporters, and its instigators.”
Zelenskyy stated on Saturday that Ukraine had targeted ships in the Caspian Sea that he claimed were carrying military cargo linked to Iran. He wrote on the X platform: “We targeted ships used to transport military cargo related to Iran, as well as a warship.”
