The Iranian news agency Tasnim revealed on Sunday afternoon that the return of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to Pakistan, which is leading the mediation between Tehran and Washington, is to convey four Iranian conditions for ending the war: imposing a new legal regime on the Strait of Hormuz, receiving compensation, guaranteeing that no future military aggression will occur, and lifting the naval blockade.
According to information obtained by Shafaq News Agency, Araqchi’s return to Islamabad is unrelated to the nuclear negotiations. It was noted that one of the most important items on Araqchi’s agenda during this visit was to convey Iran’s conditions for ending the war to Pakistan as a mediator.
She explained that among the issues raised by Araqchi are imposing a new legal regime on the Strait of Hormuz, receiving compensation, ensuring that no further military aggression will occur by the countries inciting war, lifting the naval blockade, and others.
Earlier today, Araqchi returned to Pakistan for another visit as part of efforts to end the war that US President Donald Trump has vowed to “win”.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad for the second time this weekend, this time the day after Trump cancelled a visit that his envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner were expected to make, amid the lack of a breakthrough to end the war that erupted with an American-Israeli attack on Tehran on February 28, 2016.
Islamabad hosted the first round of direct negotiations earlier this month as part of a ceasefire agreement between the warring parties, but no agreement was reached to end the war, whose repercussions have affected the Middle East and global energy markets.
After his first stop in Islamabad, Araqchi moved on to Muscat as part of a tour that is also scheduled to include Russia.
Iran’s official news agency (IRNA) confirmed that Araqchi arrived in Islamabad on Sunday afternoon, coming from Oman where he met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.
The Omani News Agency said the two sides discussed “the latest developments in the region, mediation efforts and endeavors aimed at ending conflicts.”
The Iranian minister met in Pakistan with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, his counterpart Ishaq Dar, and Army Chief Asim Munir. Araghchi said Tehran was waiting to see “whether the United States is truly serious about diplomacy.”
Trump announced on Saturday that Wittkopf and Kushner would not be visiting Pakistan.
He added: “We have all the paperwork. They (the Iranians) can contact us whenever they want, but you won’t be making 18-hour flights anymore to sit and talk about nothing.”
He felt that Washington had wasted “a lot of time traveling, and a lot of work.”
But Trump stressed that their not traveling did not mean a resumption of the war, adding that the Iranians “presented us with a document that should have been better than it was,” and that after the visit was canceled, “they presented a new, better document,” without giving details.
