Syria: Ready to return to the 1974 agreement with Israel

The Syrian Foreign Ministry revealed on Friday that Damascus is ready to cooperate with the United States and return to the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel.
The ministry said in a statement published on its X platform page, seen by Shafaq News Agency, that Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani held a phone call with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, during which they discussed the repeated Israeli attacks on southern Syria.
The statement added that “Minister Al-Shaibani expressed Syria’s aspiration to cooperate with Washington to ensure stability and adherence to the 1974 agreement.”
He pointed out that “the two sides discussed several issues, most notably US sanctions, the chemical weapons issue, Iranian interference, the fight against ISIS, and the future of diplomatic relations between the two countries.”
According to the statement, Minister Al-Shaibani stressed Syria’s desire to work with the United States to lift US sanctions, particularly the Caesar Act, which hinders investment opportunities and economic engagement in Syria. The discussion also touched on the possibility of the Syrian president’s participation in the upcoming UN General Assembly meetings.
For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the Trump administration continues to work to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, including moving to repeal the Caesar Act in the coming months. He praised what he described as Trump’s “historic decision,” saying it “will reshape Syria’s future.”
The two sides also announced the “formation of a joint Syrian-American committee to follow up on the chemical weapons issue,” stressing the existence of “broad consensus on the need to address this issue.”
