Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed on Wednesday that his government is proceeding with halting gas imports by achieving self-sufficiency in its production within the country.

This came during his meeting with a number of tribal sheikhs, dignitaries and social elites in areas of the capital, Baghdad, in the presence of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi and the Prime Minister’s advisor, Sarah Iyad Allawi, according to a statement issued by Al-Sudani’s media office.

Al-Sudani said during the meeting that with Iraq’s population of 46 million people, this means a need for more services.

He added, “We have taken systematic and structural steps to reform the economy and not rely solely on oil, and we are committed to completing the implementation of the reform and development project.”

Al-Sudani confirmed the cessation of imports of petroleum products, which cost us around 6 trillion dinars, adding: We are moving towards stopping the flaring of gas, which costs us $4 billion annually.

The Prime Minister said, “We have made real reforms in many areas, including the financial and banking sector, to achieve economic development.”

He pointed to the provision of an attractive and safe environment for investment, which has absorbed more than $100 billion in Arab and foreign investments.

Al-Sudani went on to say that major international companies are operating in Iraq today, which is a message that indicates the correctness of the measures taken by the government.

He pointed out that “we need national political forces that look after the interests of Iraq and the Iraqis, in light of the events and repercussions taking place in the region.”

The Prime Minister continued, saying: “We adopted a balanced policy to keep Iraq away from the wars and conflicts that the region witnessed, and we succeeded in preserving its security and stability.”
