On Thursday, outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani officially took possession of the road linking the port of Faw and the city of Safwan, as part of the government’s efforts to activate the infrastructure supporting the operation of the Grand Faw Port and to consolidate its role as a regional logistics hub.
The Director General of Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The project that was handed over today is the first section of the development road, and it is one of the strategic and important projects to prepare for the operation of the Faw port, as well as bringing the first part of the development road into actual operation.”
He added that “the road is 63 kilometers long, includes two main bridges, and passes through the submerged tunnel from both sides of the Faw port towards the Umm Qasr port and vice versa, which gives it great logistical importance in the movement of commercial transport.”
Al-Fartousi pointed out that “the project also includes a number of concrete pipe culverts and box culverts, which enhances the readiness of the route and its ability to accommodate future traffic related to the Faw port and the development road.”
On Thursday morning, Al-Sudani inaugurated the first section of the development road linking the Grand Faw Port and the international highway in Basra Governorate, with a length of (63) km.
