Outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said on Saturday that ending the military missions of the international coalition against ISIS and the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) was a success for the caretaker government he has headed for three years.
This came in a speech he delivered during the memorial ceremony held by the National Wisdom Movement in the capital, Baghdad, on the anniversary of the assassination of Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, head of the Supreme Islamic Council in Iraq.
In his speech, Al-Sudani said, “We have achieved a transition that was not limited to services and the economy, but included major political successes in important strategic files,” noting that “the end of the mission of the international coalition, and the termination of the work of the UNAMI mission, is the result of a government program that dedicated work to the sovereignty of Iraq and the independence of its political decision.”
He added, “We embarked on communicating with the regional and international community as a fully sovereign state with sound constitutional institutions and armed forces capable of maintaining the country’s security,” adding that “the world has acknowledged the importance of the successes achieved in building the state and the strong response to the demands of our people.”
Al-Sudani considered that “the turnout for participation in the elections was a response from our people to the results of working to implement government priorities according to the approach of building the state and putting Iraq first,” noting that “the effective electoral participation represented an important turning point on which we will establish the features of the next stage, to consolidate the democratic path.”
The outgoing Prime Minister called on “national forces to resolve constitutional entitlements, based on responsibility towards the country’s higher interests,” in reference to expediting the formation of the next Iraqi government.
