Former MP Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed on Thursday that the leaders of the Coordination Framework are close to deciding on a candidate for the next Prime Minister and presenting him within the constitutional deadlines, noting that the competition is still ongoing between Nouri al-Maliki and Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, but the latter’s chances are still weak.
Jaafar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the competition between the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, and the head of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, is still intense and has not yet been resolved,” indicating that “al-Sudani’s position is still weak as a result of the mistakes that accompanied his time as head of government.”
He added that “Maliki’s chances are closer to being decided in light of the support of the majority of the coordinating framework forces to lead the next phase,” stressing that “the leaders of the framework are seeking to announce the candidate for the premiership within the specified constitutional period.”
Jaafar indicated that “in the event of a deadlock regarding the nomination between Maliki and Sudani, the coordination framework will resort to Plan B, which involves selecting a consensus candidate for the next prime minister.”
