The spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Salam al-Zubaidi, confirmed on Monday that the absence of a number of heads of state from the Arab Summit held in Baghdad was due to several political and regional reasons, including the existence of disputes between Arab countries, in addition to some countries’ fears of Iraq’s development and return to its natural status.
Al-Zubaidi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that “the holding of the summit in Baghdad comes in light of the major challenges witnessed by the region, and is an important achievement in the process of transformations at the regional and domestic levels.”
He added that “most previous Arab summits did not witness a large presidential presence, as many countries were represented by low-level delegations, and this has been repeated in past summits.”
He explained that “there are several factors that may explain the refusal of some presidents to attend, most notably previous disputes between some countries, in addition to the impact of former US President Donald Trump’s visit to some countries, which may have influenced the decisions to attend.”
He pointed out that “some countries still fear Iraq and do not support its development and return to its natural status.”
