The Iraqi Ministry of Oil signed a contract on Tuesday with US company Schlumberger to develop production at the Akkas gas field in Anbar Governorate.

Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil Hayan Abdul-Ghani said, according to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that the ministry and the Central Oil Company have achieved an important accomplishment in exploiting gas from the Akkas gas field. He pointed out that the Central Oil Company has been tasked with completing the project and contracting with Schlumberger to drill wells and raise production rates to 100 million standard cubic feet per day, while canceling the previous contract with the Ukrainian company.

The minister explained that there are plans to sign a contract to establish surface facilities to exploit the field’s gas, along with a supplementary contract with the Oil Projects Company to establish a pipeline network to transport gas to central processing units. He noted that the produced gas will be directed to the Anbar power plant, which is currently under construction.

Abdel Ghani stressed the need for Schlumberger to adhere to contractual deadlines, given the urgent need for gas. He added that the project will increase the amount of gas invested in the field to 100 million cubic feet per day, out of a targeted capacity of 400 million cubic feet.

For his part, Schlumberger Integrated Projects President Gokhan Yarim expressed his happiness at signing the contract, affirming his company’s commitment to implementing the project within the specified timeline and expressing his hope for future cooperation.

Bassem Mohammed Khudair, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Extraction Affairs, said that signing the contract represents a major achievement in the gas sector, especially with a US company with extensive experience. He emphasized that the contract reflects the ministry’s vision to develop the Akkas field through national efforts and in cooperation with Schlumberger.

Khadir added that the ministry is committed to closing the flared gas file and increasing gas production by developing gas fields such as Akkas and Mansouriya, stressing the availability of a safe investment environment in Anbar.

For his part, the Director General of the Central Oil Company, Mohammed Yassin, affirmed the oil sector leadership’s support for the implementation of the Akkas field development project, noting the contract’s importance from both economic and technical perspectives, and the opportunity it provides oil companies to operate fields through direct contracts with service companies.
