A source in Sulaimaniyah province revealed on Thursday that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein chaired an informal meeting in Erbil between a delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and a US delegation, without the participation of the central government in Baghdad.
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the meeting addressed the reasons for opening the largest US consulate in Erbil, its functions in the coming period, and the expected security and economic measures,” emphasizing that “the meeting was conducted in complete secrecy and without the knowledge of the Iraqi government.”
The source added that “Hussein helped pave the way for secret agreements between the United States and the KRG to establish long-term military bases under the protection of Barzani’s border guards, in addition to controlling oil and preventing smuggling operations.”
The source indicated that “the US delegation pledged during the meeting to pressure Baghdad to release the salaries of the region’s employees,” explaining that “the meeting raised several questions due to its haste and the lack of any official statements regarding what transpired.” The source
