Saleh reveals the size of the governments monthly borrowing to pay salariesInformation / Special..
Financial expert and advisor Mazhar Muhammad Saleh revealed on Monday that the financial distress that Iraq is going through has forced the government to borrow more than three trillion dinars per month from specific government banks to cover the salaries of employees, retirees and social welfare.

The government’s financial advisor, Mazhar Muhammad Saleh, told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the government is obligated to pay all salaries of employees, retirees, and social welfare recipients, whose numbers range between ten and nine million Iraqis,” noting that “the financial hardship and crisis we are experiencing is related to the ongoing war in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Saleh continued, “The government has begun internal borrowing to cover the shortfall in monthly revenues in order to pay the salaries of employees, retirees, and social welfare beneficiaries,” noting that “the volume of monthly borrowing from government banks exceeds three trillion Iraqi dinars.”

The financial expert added that “the government has begun exploring other alternatives to secure liquidity, namely resorting to external borrowing,” noting that “this requires the passage of an external borrowing law by the House of Representatives.”
