US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Saturday that President Donald Trump prefers to reach an agreement with Iran, while indicating that their forces will not leave the Middle East.
Bloomberg quoted Rubio as saying that Trump always believes that resolving problems through understandings and agreements is the best option, adding that the US administration will give a new opportunity to see if progress can be made in this direction.
Rubio added that envoys Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner will hold meetings soon to discuss the possibility of making progress with Iran, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
He indicated that his country would not allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon, considering that this would pose a threat to the United States, Europe, global security, and the entire region.
Rubio continued, saying that US forces would remain deployed in the region, explaining that Iran had shown a willingness and ability to target the US presence there, which necessitates a continued state of deterrence and military presence.
Reuters reported earlier on Saturday that Geneva will host the second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran delegations next Tuesday.
These talks come amid pressure from President Donald Trump on the Iranian government following its crackdown on protesters, as well as a strengthening of the US naval presence in the region.
