Sabah al-Akeili, a member of the Rights Movement, confirmed on Thursday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani plans to seek a second term through new political alliances that include Sunni and Kurdish parties, distancing himself from the Coordination Framework.
Al-Akeili told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Al-Sudani is using his powers and influence to improve his image and gain support from the Shiite street in the central and southern regions, in addition to his movements in Sunni areas such as Anbar and Mosul, to ensure broader acceptance that would qualify him to win a second term.”
He added, “Al-Sudani is expected to form a new political alliance with Sunnis and Kurds, separate from the Coordination Framework, especially if he manages to secure around 50 seats in Baghdad and a number of governorates.”
Al-Akeili explained that “these movements indicate clear efforts to form a political majority government that does not rely on the Coordination Framework, which has led to a rift within the Shiite house, specifically within the framework, in order to remain in power for a new term.”
