A report published by the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat identified a “problem” suffered by the State of Law coalition, noting that its leader, Nouri al-Maliki, only has 10 parliamentary seats, which makes his negotiating position weak.
The report, which was reviewed by the Mail, stated: “The State of Law coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, is suffering from a problem. Despite winning 30 seats and coming in second among the winning coalitions within the coordination framework, Maliki and his Islamic Dawa Party only hold about 10 seats out of the coalition’s total seats.”
He added that “the election results showed that the Islamic Virtue Party obtained 12 seats from the State of Law coalition’s share, and the leader of the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades, Abu Ala al-Walai, obtained about 8 seats within the coalition; which weakens al-Maliki’s negotiating position.”
