Shafaq News/ The Taqadum Party confirmed, on Wednesday, the existence of the possibility of its leader, Muhammad al-Halbousi, returning to head the House of Representatives, while revealing that this idea had been proposed by parties within the coordination framework.
Party leader Muhammad Al-Alawi told Shafaq News Agency: “Until now there is no development regarding the election of a new speaker of the House of Representatives, and we do not believe that there is an alternative to Al-Halbousi yet, and Al-Halbousi’s return to his position is possible and there is a legal and political possibility to achieve this matter.” .
Al-Alawi added, “The idea of Al-Halbousi returning to the presidency of the House of Representatives was proposed by some parties to the coordination framework, and the return will be through legal and judicial frameworks.”
He continued: “If Al-Halbousi does not return, we do not believe there will be an alternative to him, and we expect the position of Speaker of Parliament to remain vacant until the next parliamentary elections. Everyone is aware of the difficulty of electing any replacement for him during the coming period.”
The Sunni political house is witnessing intense competition to succeed Muhammad Al-Halbousi, whose membership in the House of Representatives was revoked by a judicial ruling, while his “Taqadum” party insists on retaining the position given that it has a parliamentary majority within the Sunni component (43 seats), at a time when it sees its opponents as “sovereignty and determined.” The decision is that the position belongs to the constituents without being bound by a specific political title.
The Sunni House is seeking to quickly resolve the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, which was supposed to take place after the first session of Parliament that followed Al-Halbousi’s departure, so that there would be a new working mechanism for the Council and to resolve the suspended projects and laws in this regard, “but the accelerating events and the entry of the Federal Court on the line disrupted the choice.
The Iraqi Council of Representatives failed several times to choose a president to succeed Muhammad al-Halbousi, who was excluded from the position by a decision of the Federal Court, which ruled to terminate his membership.
Since the termination of Al-Halbousi’s membership in the House of Representatives, the Council has held several sessions, but the issue was not raised in those sessions due to the heads of the political blocs not agreeing on the alternative candidate.
