Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al-Ansari asserted on Monday that the war with Iran demonstrated that the Arab Gulf states should not rely solely on their strategic partnership with the United States to maintain their security.
Al-Ansari said during a panel discussion at the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi that “the presence of international forces in the region and the establishment of a strategic alliance with the United States is extremely important, but it is not enough.”
He added: “We in the Gulf region must realize that self-sufficiency in security is the only way forward.”
The Gulf states have been subjected to repeated and intensive Iranian strikes with ballistic missiles and drones since late February 2026, on the sidelines of the comprehensive military confrontation that broke out between Iran on one side, and the United States and Israel on the other.
Despite repeated assurances from Gulf capitals that they are not a party to this war and that they have not provided facilities for military operations against Tehran, Iran has targeted their territories under the pretext of the presence of American military bases and as part of a strategy to put pressure on the world economy.
