Iranian police confirmed on Saturday that protests in the country are widening and becoming more violent, while warning of an “armed uprising,” according to the Fars News Agency.
The Iranian news agency quoted a police spokesman as saying: “We will not allow the enemies of this country to turn peaceful demonstrations into armed unrest and uprisings, and we will protect the nation and the people until our last breath.”
Protests “against the Iranian leadership” in the capital Tehran entered their seventh day, according to activists.
Protests took place on Friday in the southern Naziabad district, where videos circulated on social media showing people moving through the streets and chanting slogans against the republic’s leadership.
Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah of Iran who was overthrown in the 1979 revolution, called for “protests in the capital.”
In a post on the X platform, Pahlavi urged a “massive presence of people in Tehran” and called for “blockades to be set up on main roads.”
