The Finance Committee of the Iraqi Parliament responded on Tuesday to statements made by an advisor to the government of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani regarding the preparation of the 2026 budget.
The Prime Minister’s Financial Advisor, Mazhar Mohammed Salih, announced last Saturday that the Federal Ministry of Finance had begun preparing the 2026 budget, in accordance with the amended Federal Financial Management Law No. 6 of 2019.
In this regard, a member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Moeen Al-Kadhimi, told Shafaq News Agency, “Talk about the Ministry of Finance beginning work on preparing the 2026 budget law is unrealistic, especially with the government’s term remaining and the upcoming elections.”
Al-Kadhimi explained that “the next government will prepare the budget law in accordance with the economic vision and measure the size of oil and non-oil financial revenues, in addition to the size of actual expenditures and expenditures in the budget,” stressing that “the next government will submit the 2026 budget law to the new House of Representatives for approval.”
