Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil announced on Tuesday the commencement of preparatory procedures to select a company to operate Mosul International Airport. This is based on directives from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and under the direct supervision of the Minister of Construction and Housing and Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangin Rekani.
Al-Dakhil explained, in a post on his Facebook page, followed by Shafaq News Agency, that “the step comes in implementation of the Diwani order that stipulated the formation of a joint committee comprising the Nineveh Governorate, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Iraqi Airports Administration Department, to undertake the task of expediting the process of contracting with a qualified operating company in accordance with approved legal and technical regulations.”
He pointed out that he “chaired an initial preparatory meeting with members of the Nineveh Governorate Committee, during which the importance of expediting the submission of bids by the companies applying was emphasized, given that operating the airport represents a strategic step towards developing economic and tourism activity and linking Nineveh to its local and international surroundings.”
Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil announced, in early May, the landing of the first experimental Iraqi Airways aircraft at Mosul International Airport.
It’s worth noting that the Mosul International Airport project saw a resurgence in 2023 due to the destruction it suffered during ISIS’s control of Mosul. Funding for the project was provided through the local government budget of Nineveh Governorate, and in direct cooperation with several government agencies, including the Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Ports Authority.
An informed source revealed last Saturday evening that Mosul International Airport will open at the end of this week, in the presence of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The visit is also expected to include the inauguration of the al-Nuri Mosque and its iconic leaning minaret.
