The popular movement expressed concern on Monday about the government’s continued push to pass the Khor Abdullah agreement, describing it as “humiliating” and considering it a relinquishment of Iraqi maritime sovereignty, in light of granting Kuwait control over Iraq’s only waterway on the Arabian Gulf.
The movement’s spokesman, Hussein Baroud, told Al-Maalouma Agency that “the Iraqi street is still concerned about the government’s insistence on proceeding with this agreement, which constitutes a clear concession of national sovereignty.”
He added that “what comes after Pillar 162 was not included in Security Council Resolution No. 833 of 1993, and therefore any government concession on this point constitutes a departure from the legal framework and an explicit declaration of abandoning Iraq’s right to Khor Abdullah. ”
Baroud called on the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister to “withdraw the lawsuit filed with the Federal Court in this regard,” demanding that Iraq’s sovereign rights not be relinquished.
