Hussein Al-Karaawi, head of the organizing body of the Popular Movement for the Belt and Road Initiative, confirmed on Tuesday that a series of concessions offered by the current Iraqi government, headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, are primarily aimed at ensuring the renewal of his term for a second term.
Al-Karaawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the pursuit of a second term is pushing the government to make dangerous political and economic concessions, most notably inviting the leader of a terrorist group such as Abu Mohammed Al-Julani to participate in the Baghdad summit scheduled for next May.”
He added that “the government has awarded operating contracts for strategic oil fields, such as Kirkuk, to British companies, and others to American companies, in a move that reflects its submission to external pressure.”
Al-Karaawi explained that “the government’s recent stance against the Federal Court regarding the dispute with Kuwait over territorial waters is a new concession added to a long list of controversial decisions.”
He continued: “The rapprochement with controversial figures internally, such as Masoud Barzani, who has repeatedly failed to abide by Iraqi law, reflects a political orientation aimed at gaining the support of influential forces at any cost.”
Al-Karawi concluded his remarks by saying: “The coming days may witness more concessions, as part of frantic efforts to ensure that Al-Sudani remains in power for a new term.”
