Iraq has been optimistic about a series of projects launched by the current government led by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, especially in the service sector and solving bottlenecks. However, there are a series of criticisms about the government’s performance regarding the corruption and espionage files that have emerged from the government and within the Prime Ministry, in addition to granting projects to parties that serve foreign interests, which is a matter that has been questioned by many political parties that have called on al-Sudani to resolve such sensitive files because they harm the people and do not serve the political process.
Ibrahim Al-Sakini, a member of the State of Law Coalition, told Al-Maalouma, “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani needs to take measures to combat corruption, arrest the corrupt, extradite wanted persons, and recover stolen funds. Al-Sudani must strengthen his ties with the Coordination Framework that nominated him for the premiership, without going towards making decisions alone, especially those related to controlling the border crossings and Iraqi airspace, after he granted them to companies affiliated with the Zionist entity.”
He pointed out that “Al-Sudani must find a solution to important and sensitive issues, and the issue of controlling ports and airspace is considered one of the important and fundamental issues, and these issues must be given priority before moving towards making ministerial changes in the government cabinet.”
On the other hand, independent MP Yasser Al-Hussaini confirmed to /Al-Maalouma/ that “the outputs of the Prime Minister’s Office are espionage, corruption, arrests, prisons, charges, leaks, contracts of submission and exceptions, so what about the government cabinet?” He pointed out that “there are some competent ministers in the government, but it is not possible to make a ministerial change through which a corrupt figure is brought to an important ministry such as the Ministry of Transport, as the Director General of Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, was nominated for the position of Minister,” criticizing the government’s move to support corrupt figures in sensitive positions such as the position of Minister of Transport.
In a related context, Al-Fatah Alliance member Ali Aziz warned of the weakness of government procedures in dealing with corruption files and the officials involved in them, saying: “Corruption continues and will continue as long as there is no real deterrent to stop this series that affects the public’s confidence in government institutions, especially since there is weakness in the procedures and tools to confront corruption, as merely withdrawing the hand of corrupt employees and officials is not enough at all, and there must be stronger and more decisive steps, and a higher level of oversight and accurate follow-up must be demonstrated.”
A number of MPs had previously stressed the importance of taking decisive judicial measures regarding some corruption files that emerged during Al-Sudani’s time in power, as well as the audio leaks and the spy network that was uncovered in the Prime Minister’s Office, at a time when some sources revealed the existence of pressures and mediations to close the case of the audio leaks attributed to the head of the Tax Authority, Ali Waad Allawi. These funds were intended to smuggle this figure out of the country and ensure that he would not be arrested and that judicial measures would be taken against him.
