Political researcher Qasim Al-Tamimi believes that the region is heading towards a new government, which will face difficult choices that will push it to accept the federal government’s conditions regarding oil and non-oil imports.
Al-Tamimi told Al-Maalouma, “The region continues to smuggle oil towards Turkish territory and obtains revenues without handing them over to Baghdad. This is the case for border crossings and other departments that receive revenues.”
He added, “The new regional government, once formed in the coming days, will have options that will push it to accept Baghdad’s conditions and continue to abide by the law in order to ensure that employees’ salaries are paid.”
He explained that “the regional government’s refusal to accept and continued procrastination regarding the delivery of revenues will push the federal government not to send salaries, a step that the regional government does not want to take, for fear of the Kurdish street turning against it, escalating matters and bringing down this government.”
