Political analyst Nabil al-Azzawi confirmed on Thursday that the 2025 elections will determine the shape of political life in Iraq for the next two decades, noting that forming the next government could take more than 60 days due to political complexities, particularly regarding the presidency.
Al-Azzawi told the Information Agency, “The 2025 elections are not merely a constitutional obligation, but a pivotal moment that will define the features of the next phase and determine the direction of governance and reform in Iraq for two decades.” He explained that “the current outcomes will redraw the balance of power among the blocs, with the emergence of new alliances and the decline of traditional ones.”
He added that “political approaches are underway among the various parties and blocs to bridge the differences regarding the form of the next government, but the process of reaching an understanding is still in its initial stages.” He pointed out that “forming the government could take about 60 days due to disagreements over the distribution of sovereign and executive positions.”
Al-Azzawi pointed out that “forming the presidency will be more complicated than choosing the prime minister, due to the delicate balance between the Kurdish factions and the conflict within the region over a consensus candidate.”
He predicted that “Iraq will witness intense political activity in the coming weeks to resolve the three presidencies, amid public pressure calling for the swift formation of a strong government capable of implementing reforms and confronting current economic and political challenges.”
