Shafaq News/ The Ministry of Planning announced, on Thursday, that the primary production capacity of the Al-Faw Grand Port project ranges between (20-45) million tons annually.
The ministry said in a statement today that the field follow-up teams in its Government Investment Programs Department visited the Al-Faw Grand Port project in Basra Governorate, which is one of the largest ports overlooking the Arabian Gulf with an area of (12) square kilometers, and the general plan for it is (54) square kilometers and occupies the sequence Twelfth among the world’s major ports.
A statement by the Ministry stated that the specialized teams were briefed on the field about the projects that are currently being implemented. These include the construction of the structures of the berths of Container Terminal (A) at a cost of (511) million dollars. It includes the construction of a quay wall with a length of (1750) meters and digging a trench with an amount of (2.7). One million cubic meters, as well as the construction of dams with a length of (22.3) km and iron piles with a number of (1734) piles, and the completion rate reached more than (44%).
He added that the second project includes the construction of the port’s navigational canal at a cost of (314) million dollars, which includes marine drilling for the canal for a distance of (23) km and a depth of (19.8) meters, and the amount of marine drilling is (55.3) million cubic meters, with a completion rate of approximately ( 4,78%).
The statement pointed out that the third project includes the construction of the first phase of marine infrastructure works for drilling and filling works, at a cost of (726) million dollars, which includes marine drilling (48.4) million cubic meters, at a depth of (19.8) meters, and land reclamation with an amount of (14.1) million. m3, in addition to constructing access road lanes with a length of (3.6) km and a width of (30) m. With an achievement rate of approximately (39.48%). The statement indicated that the Al-Faw Grand Port project consists of several phases. The first phase includes (11) projects, of which (6) have been fully completed, and the remaining (5) projects are expected to be completed in 2025, and the completion rate has reached more than (37%). He explained that the primary production capacity of the Al-Faw Grand Port project ranges between (20-45) million tons annually, with a total cost of more than (4) billion and (777) million dollars.
At the end of the year 2022, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’a al-Sudani, directed the acceleration of work in all executive paragraphs of the great port of Faw, returning to it a project “the size of Iraq and the aspirations of its people.”
The great port of Al-Faw is an Iraqi port in the Al-Faw peninsula, south of Basra Governorate, in the far south of the country. Its cost is about 4.6 billion euros and the estimated capacity of the port is 99 million tons annually, to be one of the largest ports overlooking the Gulf and the tenth in the world, and to lay the foundation stone for this project. The issue of the great port of Faw, and the delay in completing it, sparked controversy, and representatives accused successive governments of making deals with neighboring countries that neglected the construction of the port in favor of the ports of those countries.
The project also witnessed some delay after the “suicide” of the technical director of the South Korean company Daewoo, which is executing the Faw Grand Port project, for mysterious reasons.
