Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that the US sanctions imposed on his country are damaging the Iranian economy. In an interview with state television on Friday evening, Pezeshkian stated, “Some say that the sanctions have no effect at all. I really don’t know how to respond to these people.” He added, “We are in a state of war, and we must accept the conditions imposed by war.”
The Iranian president also noted that “exports and imports have declined by between 25% and 35%” in recent months, adding that gasoline prices should eventually rise “to keep pace with the decline in trade.”
He said, “We must raise the price of the third tier of the gasoline ration… for example, from 5,000 tomans to 10,000 tomans.” It should be noted that Iran applies several subsidized gasoline prices that vary according to consumption levels. Fuel prices in Iran, one of the world’s major oil producers, are among the lowest globally.
