An informed parliamentary source revealed on Sunday that the Speaker of Parliament is expected to take action to lift the immunity of about 100 MPs, in preparation for referring them to the Iraqi judiciary, confirming that summons orders are imminent for prominent local officials in the provinces.
A source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the Speaker of Parliament is preparing to lift the immunity of approximately 100 MPs in the coming period, with the aim of referring them to the judiciary on various suspicions and accusations leveled against them.”
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, added that “the Iraqi judiciary is also preparing to summon a number of current and former governors, in addition to heads of provincial councils,” explaining that “these summonses come in light of official lawsuits against them, and charges related to the squandering of public funds and cases of financial and administrative corruption.”
