Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Ali Al-Bandawi, confirmed today, Sunday, that the victory of US President-elect Trump will not affect the path of withdrawing foreign forces from Iraq.
Al-Bandawi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “Trump’s return to the White House will not affect the negotiations to withdraw American forces from Iraq, as these dialogues have reached advanced stages and there is an initial agreement to withdraw part of the forces in the middle of next year.”
He added, “These dialogues and military and security agreements are not affected by the change of US presidents. There are specialized institutions that have the authority to negotiate this file, and Iraq is continuing to end this presence in the next stage.”
He said, “Any obstruction by the Trump administration to the file of withdrawing its forces from Iraq will be met with political and popular rejection, as the government is serious about resolving this file and adhering to what was agreed upon according to documented official meetings.”
Over the past few days, Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections has raised questions about the nature of the next phase that Iraq will witness on the political, economic and security levels.
