The House of Representatives’ Foreign Relations Committee confirmed on Thursday its intention to send official letters to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to inquire about its procedures regarding the deposit of the maritime domain map with the United Nations.
Committee member MP Amer al-Fayez told Shafaq News Agency, “His committee will investigate diplomatic measures to preserve the country’s maritime borders by sending official letters of inquiry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ascertain the truth regarding what has been reported in the media about the ministry’s refusal to send the Cabinet’s decision regarding the map of maritime areas to the United Nations.”
He added, “If this is confirmed, we will take action to preserve the country’s water rights, including requesting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to state its position in written responses, as well as calling for a special parliamentary session on water rights and establishing them with the United Nations.”
He called on the relevant authorities to “clarify the reasons for what is happening,” stressing that “if the quorum for the parliamentary session is not met, the matter and the demand may be postponed to the next parliamentary session.”
Diplomatic tensions between Iraq and Kuwait have escalated recently over the issue of demarcating the maritime border beyond Marker 162, a stretch of sea that has not been fully demarcated between the two countries since the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution 833 in 1993.
Recently, several sources revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not sent the maritime domain map to the United Nations for deposit and archiving to preserve Iraq’s borders.
