Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Ali Al-Bandawi, confirmed on Thursday that the Security Committee is continuously monitoring the foreign presence in Iraq, stressing the need for the government to adhere to the agreement signed with the international coalition regarding the withdrawal of US forces.
Al-Bandawi told Al-Maalouma that “the issue of the withdrawal of US forces is being closely monitored by the parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, as it directly affects national sovereignty,” noting that “the government is obligated to implement the agreement reached with the international coalition regarding the schedule for the withdrawal of those forces from Iraqi territory.”
He added, “Parliament had previously voted on a resolution obligating the government to withdraw foreign forces, and the current government must respect this decision and work to expedite it in accordance with what was agreed upon.” She noted that “the committee is in continuous contact with the relevant parties on this issue to ensure the implementation of the agreement’s provisions without procrastination or delay.”
Al-Bandawi stressed that “Iraq today possesses security forces capable of maintaining internal security and protecting its borders without the need for a foreign presence,” calling for “a reassessment of cooperation with the international coalition in a manner consistent with national interests.”
Political and community groups have criticized the recent US moves to transfer military equipment from Syrian territory to Iraq, considering this move a clear violation of national sovereignty and a breach of existing security agreements.
