MP Haider al-Mutairi affirmed on Thursday that establishing a national mobile phone company is a strategic step towards strengthening the national economy, noting that the profits of one telecommunications company operating in Iraq have exceeded two trillion dinars annually.
Al-Mutairi told Al-Maalouma, “Developed countries rely on diversifying their sources of income to ensure funding for operating expenses, including salaries, and achieve economic stability.” He added, “Relying on oil as the sole source of revenue is no longer a sustainable option, and we must shift toward investing in promising sectors, most notably telecommunications.”
He explained that “establishing a national mobile phone company will provide a significant financial resource that can be directed to support vital sectors such as education, health, and public services,” noting that “the profits of one telecommunications company in Iraq in 2024 exceeded two trillion dinars, which confirms the importance of this sector and its ability to provide the budget with significant revenues.”
Al-Mutairi pointed out that “the presence of a national company will enhance competition in the market, raise the quality of services, and contribute to reducing subscription costs, in addition to being a step towards achieving stable and sustainable revenues that support the national economy.”
