Parliamentarian - Parliamentary consensus on amending the agreement for the withdrawal of US forces from IraqAl-Maalouma/Anbar..
Representative Ibtisam Al-Hilali confirmed, on Monday, that there is a consensus within the House of Representatives on the need to amend the security agreement signed with the United States regarding the schedule for the withdrawal of American forces from the country.
Al-Hilali said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “There is parliamentary consensus to amend the security agreement with the American side, especially after the transfer of power in the United States to the administration of President Donald Trump. The agreement was previously signed under exceptional security circumstances, and with the disappearance of the threats facing the country, it has become necessary to introduce amendments that guarantee Iraq’s sovereignty and its ability to manage its security file independently.”
She added, “The current phase is witnessing a remarkable recovery on the security and economic levels, and there are no convincing justifications for the continued presence of foreign forces, especially after repeated violations of Iraqi sovereignty were recorded.” She pointed out that “US President Trump’s vision does not align with the aspirations of the Iraqi people, especially since his approach to dealing with crises differs from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden. This requires Iraq to take a firm stance on the issue of the withdrawal of US forces, as there is no need for the presence of combat forces in light of the security and political stability that the country is witnessing.”
