Information/Report..
The Iraqi Parliament is facing a deepening crisis due to ongoing political disputes that are preventing its sessions from convening, delaying the passage of vital laws that impact citizens’ lives. Amid escalating accusations among political forces, MPs are warning of the danger this continued obstruction poses to the public interest, calling for dialogue and consensus to prevail to ensure the passage of necessary legislation before the end of the current parliamentary term.
*Dialectical laws
In this context, MP Firas Al-Maslamawi affirmed that the House of Representatives’ Presidency bears the responsibility for finalizing important laws that affect the interests of citizens and the country, emphasizing the need to achieve political consensus on them before they are placed on the agenda.
Al-Maslamawi told Al-Maalouma that “introducing controversial laws without prior resolution leads to the disruption of parliamentary sessions due to the lack of quorum, as a result of the absence of the objecting MPs.” He pointed out that “the lack of political understanding regarding some legislation hinders their passage, which negatively impacts legislative performance.”
He added, “The Parliament Presidency is required to conduct prior consultations among political blocs to ensure the smooth passage of laws within Parliament and avoid creating crises that would disrupt parliamentary work.”
*Political conflict
For his part, MP Mahmoud Al-Ziyadi warned that political disputes are now hampering Parliament’s work and leading to the disruption of its sessions, negatively impacting the enactment of essential laws that impact citizens’ lives.
Al-Ziyadi told Al-Maalouma that “the continued disruption of Parliament sessions harms the public interest and delays the passage of essential laws related to services and reforms,” stressing “the importance of prioritizing the national interest over partisan differences to ensure the passage of important legislation before the end of the current session.”
He added that “the current phase requires political cooperation to ensure the continuity of the legislative process and prevent the obstruction of the laws awaited by citizens,” calling on political forces to “assume their responsibilities and work to hold regular sessions to achieve legislative stability.”
*The legislative impasse continues.
Amid the ongoing political crisis and the paralysis of parliamentary sessions, basic laws remain on hold, awaiting consensus among political forces on their passage. While representatives are demanding collective responsibility to resolve the crisis, Iraqi citizens are anticipating serious action to ensure the continuity of the legislative process, free from narrow partisan considerations, with the goal of passing laws that meet their urgent needs.
