A reliable political source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Sunni political parties and Shiite allies have set the beginning of the next legislative term, after approving the financial budget in Iraq, as a date for withdrawing confidence from Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi.
The source, who stressed not to be named, said, “The dialogues between the political parties have reached an advanced stage regarding the file of the Speaker of Parliament, despite the division within the framework regarding the repercussions of this decision.”
The source, a politician connected to these dialogues, added that “part of the desire of the concerned parties to dismiss al-Halbousi is due to their desire to take revenge for having to give him confidence, last September, after al-Sadr’s withdrawal and the dissolution of the majority coalition.”
According to the source, Iran “has not interfered in this file so far, because it is not among its priorities at this stage, although it sent signals to the concerned parties in Baghdad stating that it does not object to the decision to withdraw confidence.”
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki met with personalities representing tribes in Anbar Province, the stronghold of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi.
One of those present at the meeting said that all those whom al-Maliki met were opponents of al-Halbousi, and they informed him of what was described during the conversation as “violations committed by the speaker of parliament in the province.”
The same source, who is one of the personalities who attended the meeting, said that “Al-Maliki told them of his full knowledge of what is happening in Anbar, and that the decision to withdraw confidence from Al-Halbousi was placed on the table, and that the intention is that the matter be completed after the approval of the budget.”
A leader in the coordination framework told Asharq Al-Awsat that the climate within the Shiite parties for many months regarding the political situation focused on the fact that “the disintegration of the Shiite house, or the multiplicity of heads in it, must be matched by a Sunni political equation, instead of the growth of a political force represented by a person.” One”. However, two personalities from the “Hikma Movement” and the “Al-Fateh Alliance” have expressed serious concerns about the impact of the attempts to dismiss al-Halbousi on the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sawadni, whose success may be complicated by this file.
A member of the “Hikma Movement” said, “Al-Halbousi’s dismissal is not unanimous within the coordination framework.”
A Sunni source close to the atmosphere of the Progressive Party, which is led by al-Halbousi, said, “Attempts to withdraw confidence are not new, and they were not surprising this time,” noting that “talk about resolving the matter is exaggerated, because the weights of the Sunni blocs and the number of their seats in Parliament are not in favor of Political parties seeking to change the rules of the game in the Sunni environment.
