The government opened the Green Zone in Baghdad to citizens on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, completely and 24 hours, after nearly 16 years of closure and after a series of partial conquests of the presidential area approved by the government after the accession of Adel Abdul Mahdi, the prime minister in October last year.
Observers believe that this is a clear indication of the improvement of the security situation in Baghdad, after years of explosions and violence, some of which lasted the Green Zone, although fortified and surrounded by a large security fence and barbed wire and guarded by special protection regiments.
A source close to the government said that “the government of Abdul Mahdi is determined to open the Green Zone on a final basis, as well as the opening of Baghdad International Airport in front of the movement of passengers and lifting all restrictions on the complexities of arrival of passengers to the airport.”
Iraqi passengers are under intense inspection at Abbas bin Firnas Square, about 10 kilometers from Baghdad airport, by private companies, but senior Iraqi officials are not subject to this series of procedures and arrive at the passenger lounge with their own cars.

Government officials and members of parliament were allowed to pass through these roads according to special security cards, and the passage of ordinary citizens was forbidden, except in accordance with special security approvals and on the guarantee of one of the security guards working in the Green Zone.
