The National Political Council, which unites the Sunni forces that won the recent elections, intends to hold an important meeting tomorrow, Sunday, to decide on the selection of the Speaker of Parliament, 24 hours before the first session of Parliament in its sixth term.
Salah al-Kubaisi, a leader in the Sovereignty Alliance, told Shafaq News Agency that “the past meetings of the Sunni political forces resolved the disputes on many outstanding issues, and what remains of the disagreement is the presidency of the House of Representatives,” stressing that “there is still insistence on the candidacy of the head of the Progress Party, Muhammad al-Halbousi, which is countered by the leader of the Determination Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai.”
He revealed that “the Sunni political forces will hold an important meeting tomorrow, Sunday, in order to decide on the issue of the presidency of the House of Representatives,” adding, “But most likely, the choice will be between two candidates from the National Political Council, namely (Al-Halbousi and Al-Samarrai), and this is normal.”
Al-Kubaisi continued, saying, “It is certain that the decision on the vote will remain in the hands of the representatives of the other Shiite and Kurdish components, and this is the closest thing to the scene.”
The National Political Council, which unites the Sunni forces that won the recent elections, failed last Tuesday evening to choose a candidate to fill the position of Speaker of Parliament.
The council’s media office stated in a statement at the time that the meeting witnessed in-depth discussions and the presentation of a number of appropriate mechanisms that would facilitate the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. It was agreed to study and discuss these mechanisms during the coming days and to make a decision on them at the next meeting.
On Sunday evening, the National Political Council also failed to choose a candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, stressing its commitment to the constitutional timelines called for by the President of the Republic.
Last Saturday, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, confirmed that the first session of the new House of Representatives, scheduled for December 29, 2025, must decide on the appointment of the Speaker of the House and his two deputies, and it is not constitutionally or legally permissible to postpone or extend it.
The National Political Council, which includes the Sunni forces that won the elections, is witnessing rapid political activity to announce the nomination of a candidate for Speaker of Parliament, through meetings described as positive that discussed the files of the Parliament’s presidency and the rights of the Sunni component.
