The European Union announced on Thursday that it had officially adopted the classification of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, following an agreement reached at a meeting of foreign ministers on January 29.
A statement published on the official website of the European Council, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, said that under this listing, the Revolutionary Guard will be subject to the restrictive measures stipulated in the EU’s counter-terrorism sanctions regime.
The regime’s measures include freezing the Revolutionary Guard’s funds, financial assets and other economic resources within EU countries, in addition to prohibiting European individuals and companies from making funds or economic resources available to it, according to the statement.
The statement said that “the decision comes as the European Union tightens its measures towards Tehran, in light of escalating tensions and accusations related to activities that threaten security and stability.”
Following this decision, there are now 13 individuals and 23 entities and organizations listed on the European “terrorism list,” and subject to the associated restrictive sanctions, according to the statement.
The measure will enter into force immediately upon its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
On January 29, EU foreign ministers agreed to add Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to the list of terrorist organizations, a move that prompted Tehran to classify the armies of EU countries as “terrorist groups.”
The Revolutionary Guard was established to protect the ruling regime after what became known as the “Islamic Revolution” in Iran in 1979, and it enjoys great influence within the country, as it controls large sectors of the economy and the armed forces.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard was tasked with overseeing Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
