Nuclear Regulatory Authority - We have radiation detection devices covering all Iraqi governoratesThe National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Authority ruled out the possibility of nuclear radiation being released if the Iranian nuclear reactor were destroyed by the Zionist entity, while indicating that it has radiation detection devices covering all Iraqi governorates. The head of the authority and head of the central operations room for radiation and nuclear emergencies, Fadel Hawi Mazban, told Al Iraqiya News that “the Zionist entity’s goal is to destroy the Iranian nuclear program, especially the Natanz and Fordow facilities for enriching uranium to high levels,” suggesting that “the destruction of nuclear facilities and buildings located at great depths, which constitute a safe place for any radiation hazard, is likely.”

He added, “Uranium in its current state is not radioactive, so it does not pose a risk of radiation emission,” stressing that “the situation is completely different from that of Fukushima and Chernobyl, which were reactors that operated for many years, leading to the explosion of nuclear fuel and the fission of uranium into other, lighter, highly radioactive materials.”

He stressed that “there is no danger of potential strikes on the Iranian nuclear reactor because there is no radioactive uranium,” explaining that “the radiation emergency room was established in accordance with the law in 2013, and there is a plan for managing radiation emergencies that was updated in 2020 and again in 2025.”

He pointed out that “the relevant sectoral bodies are taking steps to fill the infrastructure of the radiation inventory,” noting that “we have a radiation security structure, a nuclear security structure, a radioactive materials management structure, and an emergency structure that consists of legislation, systems, laws, instructions, a sectoral body, and funding.”

He continued, “The sectoral bodies that participate in the emergency room and that are responsible for managing the radiation file are the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, the Ministries of Health, Industry, Trade, Interior, Defense, and the National Security and Intelligence Services,” stressing that “the presence of the radiation emergency room is important in every country, especially Iraq, because we use some radioactive materials in hospitals, industry, and other places, and there may be misuse of these materials that requires the intervention of the emergency room, such as the leakage of radioactive materials, their transfer from one place to another, their theft, etc., in addition to the existence of problems in a neighboring country, as is currently happening with the threat of striking the Iranian nuclear reactor.”

He pointed out that “the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Emergency Room was to review ongoing preparations and anticipate any emergency that might occur,” adding, “As a sectoral body, we have radiation detection devices covering all Iraqi governorates, and we periodically monitor any increase in background radiation.”

He explained that “Iran’s nuclear reactors, Natanz and Fordow, are both approximately 500 kilometers from Iraq,” noting that “the likely scenario is that these facilities will be destroyed and buried in their location because they are located underground.”
