Zahran Mamdani became the mayor of New York City after taking the oath of office at a historic subway station in Manhattan.
Mamdani, a Democrat, was sworn in as the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States, placing his hand on a copy of the Holy Quran while taking the oath.
The inauguration ceremony, conducted by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, a political ally, took place at the old City Hall station, one of the city’s first subway stations, known for its dazzling arched ceilings.
Mamdani is scheduled to be sworn in again in a more formal and grand public ceremony at 1 p.m. in New York City Hall, by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, one of his political icons.
This will be followed by a public open event organized by the new administration in an extension of Broadway, known as “Heroes’ Valley,” famous for its celebratory parades and confetti throwing.
By taking office, Mamdani begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, becoming one of the most watched politicians in the country.
Besides being New York’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani is also the first mayor of South Asian descent, the first mayor born in Africa, and, at the age of 34, the city’s youngest mayor in generations.
