On Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and US Deputy Secretary of State Michael Regace stressed the importance of restricting weapons to the state in Iraq, following the attack on the Kormor oil field in Sulaymaniyah province.
This came during a meeting between President Nechirvan Barzani and Deputy Secretary of State Regas on the sidelines of his visit to the region to inaugurate the new building of the US Consulate General in Erbil.
During the meeting, Nechirvan Barzani emphasized that the visit reflects the United States’ commitment to maintaining its strong and strategic relationship with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He also expressed the region’s appreciation for the support and assistance provided by the United States to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in various fields.
According to the statement, the two sides discussed the general situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, stressing the importance of strengthening the region’s economic infrastructure.
Nechirvan Barzani and Rigas condemned the recent attack on the Kormor gas field, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice and to keep weapons exclusively in the hands of the state.
The meeting included discussions on US relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the results of the Iraqi parliamentary elections, the dangers of ISIS, regional developments, and a number of other issues of common interest, according to a presidential statement.
In addition, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, met with the US Deputy Secretary of State, Michael Regace, who stressed the strength of the relations between his country and the Kurdistan Region.
According to an official statement from the Presidency of the Regional Government, received by Shafaq News Agency, Rigas affirmed that “the opening of the new building of the consular complex in Erbil represents a confirmation of Washington’s firm commitment to its friendship and close relations with the region, expressing the United States’ aspiration to expand its investments in Kurdistan.”
Barzani also expressed his “gratitude for the continued American support throughout the various historical stages, reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’s full readiness to push bilateral relations towards broader horizons in all fields.”
Both sides condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that targeted the Kormor gas field. The meeting also included a discussion of the general political landscape in Iraq in the post-parliamentary election period and the course of the ongoing dialogues to form the new federal government, according to the statement.
