NASA Acting Administrator Sean Duffy said Sunday that the agency plans to restructure a project to return samples of Martian soil to Earth.
In statements, Duffy indicated that “experts and NASA leaders are working to restructure the MSR mission project to expedite and reduce the cost of returning soil and rock samples collected by the Perseverance rover from Mars to Earth.”
He added, “We are still studying various options for bringing these and other samples back to Earth as part of our long-term plans for exploring and colonizing Mars, which will span 30 years. To make a decision, we need to understand the budgets and timeframes available to us, as well as the technologies that will help us return these samples to Earth as quickly as possible.”
Duffy explained that NASA is considering alternative options, including sending another robotic mission that would not aim to return Martian soil samples to Earth, but rather to study them directly on the planet’s surface using instruments not available onboard its fifth rover. The data obtained during these studies would play an important role in preparing for manned missions to Mars.
On September 10, the Perseverance rover’s science team announced the discovery of unusual sedimentary rocks in Jezero Crater on Mars, where the rover landed in July 2020. These rocks contain potential traces of biological activity on Mars, and the “biosignature” samples collected by the rover are of significant scientific interest.
