A security source revealed, on Thursday, the sudden closure of the Harir base, where US forces are deployed in Erbil, amid an unprecedented security alert.
The source told Al-Maalouma, “The American forces deployed at the Harir base near Erbil closed all the main entrances to the base suddenly and urgently at dawn today, amid a state of high alert, without revealing the reasons.”
He added that “several helicopters were seen flying over the base, with a heavy security presence at the main entrances, where red American military vehicles were seen moving intensively,” noting that “the reasons behind this closure are still unknown, whether it is a state of emergency and maximum alert, or just seasonal military exercises that occur from time to time.”
The source pointed out that “the Harir base is the second most important American base in Iraq after the Ain al-Assad base, and during the past months it has played a pivotal role as a main supply point for American forces in the region, especially the military bases in Syria, from which many cargo planes and helicopters loaded with equipment and troops take off towards Syrian territory.”
It is noteworthy that the Harir base, which was established several years ago, includes hundreds of American soldiers, in addition to heavy military equipment, helicopters, and warplanes.
