Member of Parliament, Jawad Al-Yasari, confirmed on Monday that the Khor Abdullah Agreement file has officially returned to Parliament, after the President and Prime Minister withdrew the two appeals submitted regarding it. He pointed out that the fate of the agreement is now dependent on the will and vote of Parliament.
Al-Yasari said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “There is a clear division within the political blocs regarding the position on the agreement, between those who call for its complete rejection, and those who support sharing the creek with Kuwait, or accepting it in its previous form.”
He added that “Parliament will hold a special session to vote on the agreement, after the two appeals were withdrawn by the presidencies, in a move that came in response to growing popular pressure.” He called on members of the House of Representatives to “exercise national responsibility and not pass the agreement, out of respect for the Federal Supreme Court’s previous ruling that declared it invalid.”
Former MP and Minister of Transport, Amer Abdul Jabbar, warned in a video clip he posted on his official accounts against ignoring the court’s decision, stressing that “the ceiling of the protesters’ demands may rise to the point of demanding the dismissal of the government headed by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, in the event that Federal Supreme Court Decision No. 105 of 2023 is not implemented.”
It is noteworthy that the Khor Abdullah issue has sparked widespread controversy in recent months, amid popular and official demands to review the terms of the agreement to preserve Iraqi sovereignty and prevent any relinquishment of maritime rights.
