Former MP Ahmed Hama confirmed today, Saturday, that the political forces are finding it difficult to reach an agreement on the oil and gas law.

Hama said in an interview with Al-Maalouma Agency, “The oil and gas law has been in the House of Representatives since 2007, but no formula has been reached that satisfies all the political forces participating in the successive governments until today, and it is unlikely that these forces will reach an agreement that will lead to the legislation of the law,” indicating that “the near end of the current parliamentary session and the beginning of the election marathon, its propaganda and related preparations make it difficult to pass the law during the current period.”

He added, “External agendas are also present in this issue, and it is not unlikely that this agenda is one of the reasons for not legislating the oil and gas law, which is one of the most important laws and has great economic benefit and interest for Iraq as a whole.”

It is noteworthy that political forces and representatives confirmed the intervention of the United States to prevent the approval of the oil and gas law because it conflicts with the interests of the Kurdistan Region and to ensure the continuation of oil smuggling from the region, while former members of the House of Representatives indicated that the legislation of the law has become easier from a technical standpoint during the current stage.
