MP Haider al-Salami confirmed on Monday that more than half of the members of the House of Representatives reject the Khor Abdullah Agreement, which he described as “humiliating,” stressing that it does not respect Iraq’s rights in its strategic waterway.

Al-Salami told Al-Maalouma, “Rejection of the Khor Abdullah Agreement is growing within parliamentary circles, after more than half of parliament members signed an official document rejecting this unfair agreement, which does not respect Iraq’s sovereignty over a waterway that represents a bottleneck leading to Basra’s vital ports.”

He added, “This broad engagement reflects a national determination and a high sense of responsibility toward a strategic water facility that connects Iraq to the Arabian Gulf,” emphasizing that “the signatures of this large number of representatives are a clear message that Khor Abdullah is 100% Iraqi, and that any attempts to circumvent Iraq’s water rights will not succeed.”

He continued, “This parliamentary position represents explicit support for a national position rejecting this agreement, which does not grant Iraq its full rights to its maritime corridor.”

It is noteworthy that dozens of representatives have explicitly declared their rejection of this agreement, which they consider unfair and does not serve Iraq’s interests in its southern ports.
