MP Mohammed Al-Sayhoud affirmed on Thursday that Khor Abdullah is entirely Iraqi, emphasizing that Iraq cannot relinquish it under any circumstances.
Al-Sayhoud told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “Khawr Abdullah represents a sovereign part of Iraqi territory, and Iraq has compelling historical and legal documents proving its full ownership of it.” He explained that “the agreement that was reached under the auspices of the United Nations after 1991 came as a result of international pressure on Iraq following the invasion of Kuwait by the late Saddam regime, which did not represent the will of the Iraqi people at the time.”
He added, “Kuwait has no legal or historical right to claim the creek, and Iraq will not allow its lands to be relinquished, no matter the pressure,” noting that “there are parliamentary efforts currently underway to ensure that no inch of the country’s land is relinquished.”
It is noteworthy that the representative of the State of Kuwait notified the United Nations regarding the Khor Abdullah Agreement, obligating the Iraqi side to re-present the agreement within the House of Representatives in accordance with the constitutional and legal procedures.
