Saturday (February 15, 2025), Basra Governorate Representative Faleh Al-Khazaali addressed a sharp speech to Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, demanding that he take urgent action to demand the financial rights due to Basra Governorate, which are estimated at about 50 trillion Iraqi dinars.
Al-Khazaali pointed out in a press statement that “the federal government has not shown any interest in spending these sums, despite the province’s dire need for them.”
He explained that “he had previously sent an official letter to Al-Eidani without receiving a response. He also stressed that these funds are necessary to improve the service situation in Basra, which suffers from a major shortage of basic services.”
Basra Governorate is one of the largest and richest governorates in Iraq in terms of natural resources, as it contains huge reserves of oil. However, despite these riches, Basra suffers from a severe lack of services, which makes demanding its financial share of the country a matter of great importance.
MP Faleh Al-Khazaali had previously announced his insistence that the federal government must meet Basra’s financial demands, estimated at about 50 trillion dinars, to ensure improving living conditions in the province.
Despite the deputies’ attempts to file lawsuits against the federal government, the Federal Court issued a decision considering this issue to be within the jurisdiction of the executive authority in the province, which prompted Khazali to demand that Al-Eidani move quickly to activate the demands through legal procedures or negotiations with the federal government.
