MP Thaer Makhif attacked the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, on Sunday, accusing him of “treason” and working against the national interest by obstructing parliament’s work in coordination with Sunni and Kurdish political blocs.
“The disruption of the parliament’s work is not due to technical or organizational reasons, but rather to specific political blocs, most notably the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, who is deliberately obstructing the sessions in collusion with Sunni and Kurdish parties that do not want to pass important laws that affect the Iraqi people,” Makhif told Al-Maalouma News Agency.
He added, “Some blocs, led by the Progress Party, have become preoccupied with preparing for the elections and spending vast sums of money obtained through dubious commercial activities, ignoring their legislative and oversight role within Parliament, leading to paralysis in the issuance of laws and the disruption of vital projects.”
He pointed out that “the continued delay in holding sessions threatens the country’s stability and reflects the political irresponsibility of Halbousi and his allies.”
The Iraqi parliament has been in a state of stagnation for several months, amid escalating mutual accusations between blocs, and warnings of the impact this will have on upcoming constitutional and legal entitlements.
