Shafaq News/ On Friday, the Mosul Dam Administration raised water releases from 1,000 cubic meters to 1,200 cubic meters per second.
A source in the dam administration told Shafaq News Agency, “The absolute discharge from the Mosul Dam was changed as of 2:30 pm today, Friday, to 1,200 cubic meters per second.”
Nineveh Governorate issued a warning yesterday, Thursday, to citizens, residential, tourist and investment activities located within the Tigris River Basin, that water releases from the Mosul Dam will be increased.
However, the director of the Mosul Dam Project, Hatem Tayeb Fathi, reassured the residents of Nineveh and nearby governorates the day before yesterday, Wednesday, about the status of the dam after the wave of rain and floods, and said that it was safe and operating normally.
In recent days, Mosul has witnessed a wave of rain and major floods that have strengthened the reserves of the Mosul Dam.
The Mosul Dam is Iraq’s largest water reservoir, but it is built on gypsum foundations and requires regular cement injections to fill cracks in its structure.
In 2016, the American embassy in Baghdad warned its citizens and asked them to prepare to leave the country in the event of what it described as a disaster if the dam collapsed.
